From the Maker | About This Tea
Red Water Oolong: our classic honey-scented oolong
This tea carries the spirit of Taiwanese oolong — and the memory of the century-old "Formosa" tea trade.
A true taste of Taiwan
We use one of Taiwan's oldest tea varieties, from the Wuyi lineage. The leaves are withered and oxidised for longer than usual, then roasted the traditional way. The result is "Red Water Oolong": a rich honey aroma and a bright amber-red cup — one of the most classic flavours of Taiwanese tea.
Tasting notes
- Full, rich body with a lingering sweetness
- Floral and fruity, with a hint of ripe apple
- Round honey aroma and a soft, sweet finish
A century of Formosa Oolong
Its style goes back to the late 19th and early 20th century, when Taiwanese tea was first shipped to Europe and America and became the talk of New York. Back then, "Formosa Oolong" meant the finest oolong money could buy.
What New York loved about it:
- Medium-to-high oxidation and roasting — very close to today's Red Water Oolong
- A deep honey aroma from naturally farmed leaves
- Notes of apple, dried longan and jujube
- A bright red cup, never astringent, with a long sweet finish
- A full, round, easy-drinking body
"Exquisite aroma, honey-sweet with a mellow finish... a tea of unmatched elegance."
— a New York importer on Formosa Oolong
